The programme of the Xth International Diaghilev Festival have been announced

The International Diaghilev Festival, that has its X anniversary this year, will be held in Perm from 17 to 30 of June, 2016. The programme of the festival includes world and Russian premieres, chamber and symphony concerts, performances and exhibitions, open lectures, master-classes and informal meetings in the Festival Club.

The Diaghilev Festival 2016 will open on the 17th of June with the premiere of Verdi's  "La Traviata" directed by Robert Wilson. This co-production of Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Opera House of Linz will be presented to Perm audiences in a slightly different way from that of the Austrian version: laconic scenic ideas will be adjusted to fit the historical stage  of Perm Opera and Teodor Currentzis will present his interpretation of one of the greatest operas in the history. The production will be a tribute to Gerard Mortier.

The opera Tristia by French composer Philippe Hersant will have its international premiere at the Festival. Perm Opera commissioned the music to poems of prisoners from France and Russia, both geniuses who had been oppressed for years, such as Osip Mandelshtam and unrecognized amateurs. The concert performance will be on two places: Perm State Art Gallery and a new venue which is to be announced later.

Teodor Currentzis, Artistic Director of The Diaghilev Festival and Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre:

— This year we decided to get even closer to the ideas of Diaghilev who had always strived to push the boundaries of the arts. We added an educational element into the programme. We want people, especially young people, to have an access to the information, to the best examples of modern culture. It is not that they simply see these examples, they also meet the creators and artists. Therefore, for students we organize master classes with the leading artists who perform at the festival; Bob Wilson is among them, as well as Vincent Dumestre from Le Poeme Harmonique.

Those interested in art will be able to attend lectures of outstanding masters and researchers of opera, ballet and visual art — Alexei Parin, Vadim Gayevsky and Kirill Kobrin. The Diaghilev Festival Award Resonance — for young critics in the field of academic music and music theatre, will be awarded for the second time (the Award was established in 2014).

One of the central events of the Festival is expected to be a joint performance of the orchestra Le Poeme Harmonique known to Perm audiences from its performance in 2013 Baroque carnival, and musicAeterna choir. Together they will perform the XVII century work Selva morale e spirituale by Claudio Monteverdi.

Works of one more representative of the late Renaissance and early Baroque Cipriano de Rori will be performed by the unique choir Grandelavoix from Belgium. The choir is considered to be a pioneer of a completely new approach to the early repertoire, the approach that goes beyond historically formed performance. The success of the bold and often controversial interpretations reflected in the numerous international prizes.

Ballet lovers will be pleased to see an avant garde ballet by an acclaimed Belgium choreographer of Moroccan origin Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui who has been described as "unpredictable". This work was inspired by the ballet by Nizhinsky "Afternoon of a Faun" and choreographed to mark the centenary of the Diaghilev seasons. This ballet is "probably the most radical work out of all ever presented after Nizhinsky's production, introducing the new ballet era", — Tatiana Kuznetsova says.

Lovers of classical and neoclassical style will see the latest premiere of the current season, the ballet Swan Lake in Alexei Miroshnichenko's version. The ballet is stylized on "grand ballet" piece of the last decade of the 19th century.

The concert programme presents famous names of masterful musicians: Lucas Debargue (piano), a young performer who created a sensation at the Tchaikovsky Competition, and Caroline Widmann (violin), an artist, playing on her 234 year old violin classical and newly composed works. Besides, both performers will take part in night concerts of Violin Gala and Piano Gala, traditional yet magical events. Works performed by Anton Batagov, Thomas Zehetmair and Alina Ibragimove will be announced only after the concert is over.

Vocal concerts stand aside as one of the significant events during this year's festival: Liederabend featuring baritone Andre Schuen who has been already introduced to Perm audience as Don Giovanni in Autumn 2014, and who will perform romantic and avant garde works and mezzo soprano Paula Murrihy together with the soloists of the orchestra musicAeterna will present her interpretation of Hindemith and Mahler.

Teodor Currentzis, Artistic Director of The Diaghilev Festival and Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre:

— All concerts will be very special. There will be night gala concerts, concerts in new venues, concerts-meditations which will allow to grasp music not with your mind but other channels.

A rock band from Rostov "Motorama" will be the guest of the festival and will perform Indi-rock. Within a short period of time the band got known in Russia and abroad. In 2011 Motorama and a side project "Morning" were nominated for the "Coyote" Award.

The concert of the festival orchestra will bring to a conclusion the two-week music and theatre marathon with the performance of the 6th symphony by Gustav Mahler with maestro Currentzis conducting.

Teodor Currentzis, Artistic Director of the Diaghilev Festival and Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre:

— This year The Diaghilev Festival lasts for two weeks and our big intention is to make Perm an attractive place to stay in for everyone attending the festival, its open lectures, discussions, meetings which are free of charge. The most important thing for us is to create the field transmitting messages that encourage young generations to reflect on the life and art.

Traditionally the Diaghilev Festival will be held in several venues — Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, The Organ Hall, Perm State Art Gallery, The House of Diaghilev and a new venue which is still a secret.

The Theatre Club will be built on the theatre square (the programme to be announced later). This year the Club will transform into a separate project with a longer period of work, throughout the summer months. Pavilion "Meeting point" is an area for co-creation and co-authorship where visitors can meet, exchange experience and learn.
