Sergei Diaghilev’s private ballet company Ballets Russes got to the apron stage of European music theatre thanks to two masterpieces. In 1910 “The Firebird” became a remarkable success with the audience of Théâtre du Châtelet. The music for the ballet was composed by a literally unknown Igor Stravinsky. Next year the ballet impresario brought to Paris another performance which would astonish not only ballet lovers, but even the most sophisticated connoisseurs of music. “Petrushka” originated as a synthetic piece. Igor Stravinsky composed the music and wrote the libretto in cooperation with Alexandre Benois who participated as both theatre designer and head of the troupe. Choreographer Michel Fokine and other Diaghilev’s associates took part in the creation of this magnum opus of 1911 Russian Seasons.

“The Firebird” develops and pushes to the limit the music language of late romanticism, that was inherited by Stravinsky from his teacher, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. In “Petrushka” Igor Stravinsky made a breakthrough in his approach to music writing. The music for this “street ballet”, to use Benois’ definition, featured previously never-heard-before tones, rhythms and polytonality which gave birth to European neo-folklore style.

The music for these one-act plays has become an all-time classic of the world’s orchestral music. Both scores will be performed by musicAeterna and its conductor Teodor Currentzis in one evening show. This key event of Diaghilev+ will demonstrate how XIX-century music stepped into XX-century and what resonance this endeavor has had a hundred years later.

World premieres of chamber settings of the Charles Baudelaire's poems

Musical-poetic performance

In 2021 the world celebrates the 200th birthday of Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867), the first of "the cursed poets", a dandy, a decadent, a symbolist, posthumously recognized as the great poet of France who had a powerful impact on the poetic language and, more broadly, literature, music, and art of the 19th–20th centuries. His collection of poems "The Flowers of Evil" (editions 1857–1868) is read, studied, and translated all over the world.

musicAeterna under the direction of Teodor Currentzis has created a project dedicated to Charles Baudelaire consisting entirely of world premieres created at the request of the collective. Famous contemporary composers have set the verses from "The Flowers of Evil" to chamber compositions. The new works range from songs for voice and piano to electronic compositions and large-scale canvases featuring chamber choir, wind instruments, and percussion.

"Dedication to Baudelaire" is not just a concert. The poet's verses will be performed in the original and in Russian translations by dramatic actors from France and Russia. The musical and plastic performance will link a number of world premieres into a single plotline, defiantly rebellious and appealing to the supreme beauty, reaching beyond the usual forms and norms, just as life, death, and the immortal works of Charles Baudelaire.
